Where Mill & Acre comes from

For generations, people across the coldest climates on earth stayed warm in cotton-insulated garments that breathed, lasted, and needed nothing synthetic. In China, this tradition goes back to the Ming Dynasty, over 500 years of the same construction: cotton shell, cotton batting, cotton lining, hand-quilted. My grandmother was one of them; every winter she made a mianao, a quilted jacket filled with cotton batting, warm, breathable, and built to last a season and be remade the next.

No skin irritation. No synthetic cling. Everyone stayed warm.

John and I started Mill & Acre because that coat should still exist. Not as nostalgia, but as a standard. Cotton shell, cotton batting, cotton lining, built to a level the outerwear market has never seen.

Is cotton insulation actually warm enough for winter?

Yes. Cotton batting has insulated outerwear in cold climates for centuries, including some of the coldest winters on earth. It retains heat effectively while remaining breathable, so your child stays warm without overheating indoors. The difference from synthetic fill isn’t warmth; it’s what happens to that warmth when you walk inside.
Can I actually put it in the washing machine?

Yes, the Kids Single-Face Quilted Jacket is machine washable in cold; lay flat to dry. We designed it this way deliberately: a coat worn by a child needs to be washable without becoming a project. The cotton construction holds up.

When does it ship?
